“Come back to the breath; come back to now.”
The breath is the one thread that runs through your entire life, from the first inhale to the last. Always available, always now, always the fastest route back to yourself. Hemp knows this power well: it is one of nature's great breathers, drawing carbon from the air faster than most forests and exhaling the oxygen that keeps us alive. Every breath you take is a trade with the green world. Breath appears when you have drifted: into the future's anxieties, the past's regrets, the mind's endless commentary. It is the gentlest of all the cards and the most immediate.
It asks nothing grand. Simply breathe, consciously, and notice that the present moment, the only one you ever actually live in, is reachable in a single exhale. There is profound intelligence in this. The breath regulates the nervous system; lengthen the exhale and the body calms, the racing mind settles, perspective returns. Whatever you are facing, you will face it better from a regulated state than a panicked one, and the breath is the lever you always have. This card may also be pointing to the life force itself. Your vitality, your aliveness, what the ancients called spirit. Are you fully breathing your life, or holding it in, living shallowly? Take one full, deep breath now. Let the exhale be longer than the inhale. This, too, is a practice. And it is the foundation beneath every other practice on this path.
AffirmationI return to my breath, and my breath returns me to now.
ReflectionWhere in my life am I holding my breath instead of fully living it?
